*This Event is Outdoors. Please plan accordingly.*

Legends are stories passed down through generations based in truth.

You just have to be paying attention.

The paranormal is not an exact science.

The supernatural is not a convenience for theorists.

These will be your realities, along with death, debts, and destruction, You just have to be paying attention.

All the men of the 24th Infantry arrived in Salt Lake City in the fall of 1896, much to the shock and dismay of the citizens of Salt Lake. During their time in Salt Lake City, they manned Fort Douglas, were called to the battlefront of war twice, faced racism, and earned the love and respect of the citizens. Can a descendant and young journalist discover the root cause of the mysterious deaths or will her own familial and romantic struggles obscure the unbelievable truth? In the end, we all have unknown histories, destructive stories, and debts.

Do we have your attention?

Inspired by the graphic novel “Mushroom Murders” written by local Utah author Chad Anderson

ABOUT DEXO

Deseret Experimental Opera was founded in 2013. We produce unconventional operas across and about the Wasatch Front that foster a cross-disciplinary community of artists. We received nonprofit status in April 2019. Please consider donating to support the artists you saw tonight, and to help us continue our work. Thank you!

Land Acknowledgement

Deseret Experimental Opera and our affiliates acknowledge that our programs are held on the ancestral land of the Nuche (Ute), Nuwu (Paiute), Newe (Shoshone), Kutsipiuti (Goshute), Diné (Navajo), and Ancestral Puebloan peoples. We acknowledge the affects of our colonial history, as well as the environmental impacts of contemporary developments. We are grateful to be able to respectfully foster connection to Utah lands and first peoples through our programming, and to engage in these conversations through art with our communities.

Some Say

“Some say the first mushroom grew in West Africa when two brothers couldn't pay their debts. In complete despair, they ended up transferring their debts to a bush fowl, who transfers them to a silk tree, who tries to make as much silk as possible to pay off the debts, but the silk is ruined by a passing elephant. And so, the debts continue to be transferred from silk tree to elephant, to hunter, to tree stump, to clever white ant termites, who use pure white linen thread, laid out in the sunshine, to weave and sell to pay off the debts that were passed onto them.

Men see the weaved white linen on and around the termite hills and call it "Mushroom". The actions of the two brothers and the weaving of the white ants created a life force who calls himself “The Mushroom King." In a realm hidden from our own, he dwells with those that call him "Master”, they do his bidding while he grows stronger each generation, thriving off of the emotional distress of those who are duty-bound, obligated, chargeable, but cannot satisfy their debt. Soon the time will come when the two worlds will become one and the Mushroom King will reign supreme!”

Emerald’s Phone Call #1

Hi Mom, I made it

I'm in Salt Lake City

I start my new jog today

I’ve got to admit 3

Or 4 times I doubted

I’d make it this far

When you come from the wrong end of town

It’s bizarre

To think back on the people

Who’d swear and insist

That all your aspirations

Should just be dismissed

Because there’s nothing bigger

Out there that exists

A girl should be happy just to subsist

Why persist?  That’s the gist

Of the message I missed

When I set out to become

A broadcast journalist

But here I am and it’s a dream

Come true. But enough about that, mom

How are you?

Queen Finale

Try to hush the voices in your head

that say resist, it's futile

I'm your queen, and I simply

do not accept the word refusal

You should call me mama

because I made you

and if and when I wanna

I can take you

You should hush that drama

I'm here to get paid, you..

Hush the voices in your head

that say resist, it's futile

I'm your queen, and I simply

do not accept the word refusal

You should do my bidding

like George in his cage

who do you think is winning?

Do you want to see me rage?

you should be submitting

to the Mushroom Age

I'm your queen, I'm your queen, I'm your queen, I'm your queen

I'm your queen, I'm your queen, queen

I won't give up I won't lay down

You should be handing me the crown

Know what time it is

You can bet, positive

it's the Emerald Age, Emerald Age

(Sterling, Sterling, Earth to Sterling)

You should hush that drama

it was great great grandma

Lena made you queen

now the slate is clean

I guess what I mean is

I'm your queen, I'm your queen, I'm your queen, I'm your queen

I'm your queen, I'm your queen, queen

Collaborators

Emerald

Kaushay Ford (she/her)

is honored to be in her second production with DEXO after nearly 5 years. She was a featured performer in DEXO's 2047 Series' show "Back Below" and is excited to once again join a talented cast in "Mushroom Murders". Kaushay has performed on and off for more than 10 years in theater and musical theater. Some of her favorite performing credits include Judine in "Hairspray", Heavenly Mother in "Mother Wove the Morning", and Doris in "Fame". When not on stage, Kaushay can be found telling stories in every art form imaginable: planning weddings, writing children's books, singing, acting, and occasionally reenacting her favorite scenes from old rom-coms. She is grateful for the opportunity to create art in so many collaborative settings and truly believes that doing so creates kindness, empathy, and connections that truly make life beautiful.

Sterling

Spencer Ford

is delighted to be back at DEXO, contributing to new art. His favorite desserts always include chocolate, and if he visits a new place and they have a chocolate milkshake, he is compelled to try it. He is very confused why thick milkshakes have become such a trend; they're impossible to drink and have no benefits for taste. Feel free to fight him about it after the show. He hopes you find 'Mushroom Murders' as much of a treat as it was for him to participate in!
